This past week we decided to run out of Ozello North. That's the Pirates cove, end of Ozello Trail area for those unfamiliar with the area. The Snook and Trout bite was phenomenal!
We launched at the bottom of the outgoing tide and ran to the outer island points then fished our way into the deeper cuts in the mangroves. Any potholes we found with more than 2' of water in them were holding fish especially on the points. Multiple Snook, Redfish and Trout were caught in each spot we fished. Once we reached dead low as expected the bite slowed up, so we moved to the flat starting at Shark Pt. and drifting between Sandy Hook toward Bear Island. If you have contour charting on your plotter you can follow the deeper contours through the area. Letting the wind blow us east, we found plenty of inshore mid slot trout still on the flats holding on the rocky bottom with grass adjacent to it.
All the fish came on either Watermelon Red Flake or Golden Bream MirroLure Little John XL's. Rigging them on 1/8oz jig heads with a Seaguar 30lb fluorocarbon leader attached to 10lb Power Pro Braid. The leader is definitely over kill for the Trout but with so many Snook and Reds mixed in it just made sense and the fish didn't seem to care. The Trout were holding close to the bottom and liked a retrieve with the bait bouncing off the structure. The Snook were killing a fast twitching, close to the top retrieve.
That's it for this week, until next time,
Tight Lines.
